Fix It Yourself covers essential repair skills over multiple hands-on workshops. The course is designed to help you save money, cut waste and get hands-on fixing experience in a friendly environment.
Each session covers a different topic so by the end of a term you’ll have learned loads of new skills you can put to use at home - or by volunteering for us!
Each session is designed for beginners and includes a blend of listening, watching demos and hands-on fixing.
Course content:

Session 1: Safe repairs and cables (Learn the basics of safe electrical repair and get hands-on with portable appliance testing).
Session 2: Plug repair and rewiring (Discover how plugs work and practice safely rewiring plugs).
Session 3: Switches and wires (Learn to fix faults in switches and wire a switch into a lamp).
Session 4: Sockets and bulbs (Discover how to wire up bulb holders and assemble a lamp from scratch).

Session 1: Rookie Repairer (Learn and practice how to wire plugs and use tools to do so, as well as how to approach repair - learning visual safety inspection of items as a group and individually).
Session 2: Bulbs and Basics - Lamps part one (Learn lamp, switch and bulb holder wiring, explore different lamp components).
Session 3: Light It Up - Lamps part two (Building on bulbs and basics: Explore some sabotaged lamps, bring your own, diagnose and repair them).
Session 4: Nice Splice - Soldering part one (Intro to connecting wires and soldering - splicing wires, repairing connections).
Session 5: Through The Hole - Soldering part two (Building on Nice Splice - soldering part one: Hone your solder skills -solder and desolder components on printed circuit boards).
Session 6: Fix It Myself! (Explore sabotaged toasters, diagnose and repair them with the skills you’ve learned during the course).

Session 1: Tools of the Trade (Get familiar with plugs, fuses and a range of tools in this hands-on first session).
Session 2: Fixing in the Kitchen Part 1 (Learn how to repair and maintain kettles)
Session 3: Fixing in the Kitchen Part 2 (Try dismantling and repairing a toaster - discover common problems and how to fix them).
Session 4: Making Connections (Learn all you need to know about wires, circuits, cables, and connectors).
Session 5: Let There Be Light (Learn how to repair lamp switches, lampshades, lights and bulbs).
Session 6: Take Them to the Cleaners (Learn how to maintain and repair vacuum cleaners).
Session 7: Sew It Goes (Learn how to repair and maintain sewing machines).
Session 8: Listen Up (Learn how to repair and maintain speakers and audio equipment).
Session 9: Safety First (Safe electronics repairs and appliance testing).

Session 6: Fix It Myself! (Building on prior lessons, but really recommended to have attended Rookie Repairer at least - explore sabotaged toasters, diagnose and repair them with the skills you’ve learned during the course).
We suggest coming along to all the sessions if you can, as they build on each other, but you can also attend any of the sessions individually.
