December Newsletter: Fixing Factories end of year roundup!

In 2022 we launched our first two Fixing Factories in Brent and Camden. It’s been really exciting to bring these visions to life and make such great progress in such a short amount of time.  We’re really looking forward to seeing what 2023 brings.

If you have any fixing skills and would like to volunteer or have any ideas you’d like to tell us about please contact us at hello@fixingfactory.org, we’d love to hear from you. For more details on our volunteering opportunities click here.

Here is a small selection of highlights from this year:

At the Camden Fixing Factory

After the hugely successful launch of the Camden Fixing Factory in October we’ve been busy with our #Don’tThrowItThursday market fixing sessions and repair club Tuesday evenings.

We’ve been visited by BBC London, BBC Breakfast and some other film crews too! Watch our features to hear stories about what we’ve been up to..

At the Brent Fixing Factory…

In November we donated our highest number of laptops to local residents in Brent so far, this brings our total for devices to a whopping 27 for the year!

We’re very grateful to all of the volunteers who have spent time helping us upload data, refurbish devices and attend outreach events this year. We’ve recently been joined by great students from our partners at Skills Training UK, hear what they thought about it:

‘It’s been an enjoyable experience. We’ve learnt loads of new skills like how to data wipe devices, updating the systems, installing operating systems. We did some hardware repairs, it was quite adventurous as we got to learn something new. We think this will help us in our future careers in IT as we’ve gained loads of hands-on experience. It’s been good in helping us learn what  a work day looks like, we’ve enjoyed coming in everyday and look forward to it.’ (16,17,18) Gergo, Ramanjot and Sayeed. Skills Training UK

Through our monthly Dr. Laptop events we’ve been able to support 70 people with free repair advice for their laptops and tablets. This equates to 5603kg of carbon emissions being prevented!

Wishing you a wonderful festive season and a great start to the New Year!

Thanks,
The Restart Project team (on behalf of all Fixing Factory partners)
